Understanding the 4Cs of Diamonds
When you talk diamonds, the 4Cs are always used to describe their characteristics. Each of the Cs is evaluated for quality and is graded on a scale.
Carat
Colour
Diamonds come in various colours but most diamonds found in jewellery stores run from colourless to near-colourless, with slight hints of yellow. The industry standard scale for measuring colour begins with the letter D, representing colourless, and continues with increasing presence of colour to the letter Z. Colour is a natural element in diamonds. The more yellow the tint of colour, the less the sparkle of the diamond because light performance/reflection is reduced.
Clarity
Cut
Diamond cut refers to the precision of angles, proportions and symmetry, which directly impact brilliance, fire and scintillation. According to the GIA diamond cut grades on the scale of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. The cut is the biggest indicator of the beauty of the stone.
